Audi has revealed the latest generation of its 3.0-liter TDI engine at the 35th International Vienna Motor Symposium (May 8-9). The new V6 turbodiesel features a 90-degree cylinder bank angle and a displacement of 2,967 cc.

The unit is offered in two states of tune producing 215hp (218PS) and 268hp (272PS), compared to 201hp (204PS) and 241hp (245PS) on the current generation of the 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine.

Depending on the model, the 268hp version produces a peak torque of up to 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft), 50Nm (37 lb-ft) more than the current 241hp engine. Despite the added power and torque, Audi says the new 3.0 TDI is as much as 13 percent more fuel-efficient that its predecessor, again depending on the model.

The new V6 diesel is fitted with high-end features including piston rings and pins optimized for minimal friction, separate coolant loops for the crankcase and the newly designed cylinder heads, updated thermal management system, as well as updated turbocharger and fully variable‑load oil pump.

The engine also has a Nox storage catalytic converter with a diesel particulate filter and SCR injection, with Audi saying it is for the first time in automotive history that these technologies are combined in a single assembly.

The new engine satisfies the most stringent of emissions legislation, including the Euro 6 standard, thanks to an integrated exhaust gas after-treatment. The 3.0-liter TDI’s CO2 emissions are an average 15 grams lower than its predecessor, earning the new engine the “clean diesel” suffix.

Besides the new 3.0 TDI, Audi is also presenting a new seven-speed dual‑clutch transmission for models with longitudinal engines and front‑wheel drive. Audi says the latest-generation S tronic is “extremely sporty, yet very comfortable.” The new transmission is said to reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 10 grams per kilometer.
