We still can’t exactly place our finger on what kind of game Mad Max will be, but we are being assured through the latest trailer that there will be a lot of vehicular combat and carnage involved.

However, it seems that developer Avalanche studios (responsible for the open-world game Just Cause), isn’t revealing any of the actual gameplay mechanics – these have better be good, because the damage model we’re seeing in the footage is not at all impressive.

In fact, the damage engine in this game would have looked believable in 2006, since now technology has moved on and discerning gamers will notice the discrepancy in realism between this title and others like Beam NG and Next Car Game; big explosions can only do so much to mask technical limitations…

Yeah, you can customize the vehicle you drive (called the Magnum Opus and also being built in metal by West Coast Customs), but no matter how many styles of front bullbar you can opt for, if it doesn’t fall off in a realistic manner in a big-budget 2014 game, then we’re not sold on it.

We’re still waiting for an actual gameplay video to see if this semi-negative first impression is carried through.
