Mario Kart may look cartoonish and childish at first, but there are actually many serious gamers out there who will advocate for the skills and knowledge required to be consistently good at it. This familiarly colourful frenzy of powerups, loop-de-loop roadways and huge ramps has now reached its eighth installment and is ready to land on the latest generation of Nintendo’s console, the Wii U.

The developer recently released a trailer highlighting some of the differences and features that it has over previous iterations of the series, and the most noticeable is the upping of the graphics quality; it looks more next-gen-ish than it ever has, and that’s down to the higher processing power of the Wii U.

A lot can be extracted from the trailer, but since I’m not the biggest Mario Kart fan, it’s best to leave those who know more to pass on the information. The second video posted after the trailer, courtesy of IGN, explains it almost frame by frame.

The game launches May 30 exclusively on the Wii U.
