Tesla has officially opened its first Supercharger station in Beijing, China. It’s a small step towards a more noticeable presence on the Chinese market, after its approach to selling cars was criticized when they were not able to meet preorders or keep promises made about the charging infrastructure they were supposed to put in place.

Once the latter is all set up, then, and only then, can Tesla consider local manufacturing of its cars.

It’s not actually the first-ever Supercharger to be set up in the People’s Republic, as CNET reports that the first ones “were officially switched on for public use as early as April 26” – two additional stations already operational in Shanghai, with plans to extend to “Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen before the Chinese fall season… A charging station in Dalian city is also planned for the future.”
