2015 VW Polo GTI Facelift Gets New 190PS 1.8L Turbo and Manual Gearbox

The Golf GTI’s little brother has undergone a facelift with the big news for the 2015 Polo GTI being the introduction of a new 1.8-liter turb’d engine that replaces the previous 1.4-liter turbo.

The four-cylinder unit is from the VW Group’s new EA888 engine family and it produces 190PS (187hp) and 320Nm (236 lb-ft), an increase of 10 horsepower and 70Nm (52 lb-ft) over the smaller displacement 1.4-liter turbo.

In addition, whereas the pre-facelift Polo GTI was available exclusively with a DSG double-clutch transmission, the new model can be fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox as well for those who prefer working with three-pedals.

VW quotes a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 236km/h (148mph). By comparison, the 180PS (178hp) Polo GTI 1.4 TSI completed the standard run in 6.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 228 km/h (142 mph).

As with the regular facelifted Polo range that is already on sale, the GTI gets some faint styling changes, including re-sculpted bumpers and available LED headlights on the outside, and new instrument panel, steering wheel design and center stack controls inside.

We’ll see the updated Polo GTI at next month’s Paris Motor Show.

Those lights and that lower grill… looks kind of disjointed and ugly. Looses a bit of the sweet design style of the original Polo GTi

    • TheHake

It looks much better in the flesh. Photos don’t do it any justice.

      • That Ross Chap

I have seen the current one (which I really like) but it’s just this facelift… looks a bit off

    • kh

      completely agree

  • BlackPegasus

Unlike the rest of the lineup, I think this VW has retained most of it’s athletic DNA over the years. This latest iteration looks fresh while keeping it’s traditional lines. I like it a lot!

  • Zandit75

I hate that Tartan interior so much…..
    Time for an update VW!

    • TheHake

The Tartan is traditional GTi. If you don’t like it, take it with leather.

      • Zandit75

Yes, I understand that, but there is a huge difference between holding blindly onto a traditional design, and giving a tribute to the heritage.
Don’t worry, If I was in the market for one of these, I would option the Ford Fiesta ST Leather!

    Bored Polo looks bored.

    • Yoyo

      You’re boring.

      • Julien Lachemoi

        Thank you.

  • mugwump

Vw’s look so boring and ugly these days/ IS it me or was my ’91 GTI 16v a sexy car that looked the part unlike these disasters? The front is beyond belief. What were they thinking? Cheap manufacturing process?

    • Yoyo

By boring and ugly you mean good and clean design than you’re exactly right.

      • mugwump

No son, its just plain ‘ol boring. Try not to be such a dim witted fanboy.

  • YipYap

We don’t get these in the US, but it looks like a sweet ride.

  • Yoyo

Tell me yet again why we don’t have the Polo available in the US? Tell me why it wouldn’t sell VW? Bull crap.

    • Zandit75

Are you an employee of VW, or paid to make these comments on all VW articles?

      • Harry P. Ubes

Yoyo is like a petulant child.

  • MRm_mcreedy

just tested the face lifted polo GT dsg (150bhp) and ride is very nimble but I cant get past how bland it looks Fiesta ST is cheaper looks so much nicer.

    • Frankos

Ford Fiesta looks like ia cheap boy racer car, tacky and will date very quickly. Polo is refined more grown up, much more stylish. Let me guess, you are under 25, wear a cap back to front on your head and drive with your tattooed arm out of the window?

      • MRm_mcreedy

my large tattooed arms stay inside always
