Couple Films Freight Train Smashing Through Stuck Truck in Louisiana

A couple witnessed a terrifying accident that took place Sunday afternoon in Mer Rouge, Louisiana, when a freight train crashed into an 18-wheeler stuck on the tracks.

The man took his camera out as soon as he saw that the truck was hung-up on the railroad crossing.

The truck driver jumped out of the vehicle before the crash and was uninjured. Some 18-train cars were derailed and two people were injured in the accident, according to Mer Rouge Police Chief Mitch Stephens.

“Two injuries; the train conductor and engineer. Right now they are not life threatening but they are serious injuries,” Stephens told Myarklamiss.

And here’s the eyewitness report from the YouTube author at “David’s Garden Seeds And Products” channel:

“We were sitting at a train track today on our way from West Monroe, LA to Memphis when we notice a tractor trailer with a crane stuck on the train tracks. Then the train crossing lights came on and I grabbed the camera as the train smashed into the crane.

We are getting a lot of comments about how we should have called 911 instead of filming. There was no need as we were sitting right in front of the police station. Believe me, they heard the crash and came running out.

By the time we were able to go around the train and get to the other side, the police were over there and the driver of the truck was there as well. He is fine but we understand that the train engineers were in pretty bad shape. The thoughts and prayers of David’s Garden Seeds And Products are with them. We pray that God will heal them.

At the time of the crash, we were in shock and I had no idea what had come out of my mouth until I played the video back….you just don’t know how you will react to tragedy that unfolds right before your eyes until it happens.”

Correction: The train wreck occurred in Louisiana and not in Los Angeles.

That’s Louisiana not Los Angeles. Looks like the couple is from Texas.

Seeing all those tanker wagons and the white “smoke” billowing from the derailed units, I’d have been outta there at high speed.

  • The dog that humped your leg

So the truck driver was likely out of the truck but what about the engineer?

It’s in the article- “Two injuries; the train conductor and engineer. Right now they are not life threatening but they are serious injuries,”

  • seems that these types of accidents happen all the time in usa. dont they have any safety features to stop the train automatically?

    • We can’t will physics away

These kind of freight trains need miles to slow to a complete halt safely. Such trains themselves are usually over a mile long. And with trains being variable in length & mass (+ speed), their braking distance is different for each train, on every single journey. The above clip shows this train took around half a mile (30+ cars) to stop….after an impact.

If crossing closure timing were varied in real time for every train (assuming a tech solution was cost viable/reliable), halted road traffic would have to suffer unpredictable waiting periods, everytime.

Basically, the best saftey feature is a road bridge/tunnel. Crossings prevail because they are cheap, and insurance companies are still willing to cover frieght trains (with no legal limit on length) using the 155,000 miles of lines across the US…..
