Tesla Motors’ success has inspired other companies to try and bring electric vehicles to market, and Detroit Electric is one of those preparing to start producing their first model.

They even went down the same road as Tesla and chose the Lotus Elise as a base for their first car, the SP:01 electric sports car. But despite reviving the century-old Detroit Electric name, the company will build its cars in the UK and focus on European and Asian markets – at least for the time being.

Until the first production car rolls out the assembly line, Detroit Electric has announced a refreshed corporate identity, including a modernized company logo and new brand colors. The company has also released a teaser video hinting at the final exterior design of the forthcoming SP:01 EV sports car.

The video shows the rear end of the car, which appears to feature similar taillights but a different design of the rear window. The latter now seems to extend all the way to the boot lid, with the SP:01 adopting the shape of a fastback coupe instead of sticking to the original roadster shape.

Detroit Electric doesn’t say anything about that, but interestingly enough, the word “roadster” is not mentioned in the release, with the company describing the SP:01 as a sports car.

As for the logo, Detroit Electric says it has been modernized to reflect the company’s “pioneering and energetic values,” adopting the brand’s new colors of blue and white “while maintaining the art deco character and integrity of the original styling.”
