McLaren has released the first interior photos of the track-exclusive P1 GTR, which features a steering wheel inspired by the one from the MP4-23 Formula 1 car.

McLaren says the stripped-out, driver-focused interior has been designed with driver engagement and weight saving as key priorities. The center piece is the newly developed steering wheel, which has been designed to make all controls as easily accessible and user-friendly as possible. Although unique to the McLaren P1 GTR, the design of the steering wheel is based on the steering wheel of the 2008 Formula 1 championship-winning MP4-23.

The steering wheel features key controls including the mode switches, just like on a Formula 1 car, allowing drivers to fully adjust the setup and characteristics of the car without their hands from the wheel. The DRS (Drag Reduction System) and IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) buttons are retained on the steering wheel.

The cabin is fitted with lightweight DTM-style carbon fiber seats and full six-point motorsport harnesses. Each seat will be specifically set up for the individual driver, and mounted directly to the chassis, reducing weight by having no additional mounting brackets. There’s only one “luxury” that the P1 GTR retains from the production model, and that is the air conditioning system.

McLaren has also released the first uncamouflaged photos of the P1 GTR taken during testing in Bahrain, showing the latest aerodynamic and cooling updates being trialled. The car is finished in a combination of Carbon Black paintwork and bare carbon fiber bodywork. McLaren says all tests were completed with results meeting or, in many cases exceeding, the stringent targets set.

As a reminder, the P1 GTR promises 986 horsepower (1000PS) from its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 and electric motor combination – that’s 84PS (83 hp) more than the street-legal P1.

The car will be available for customers taking part in the McLaren P1 GTR Driver Program, with entry tickets costing £1.98 million ($3.18 million). Scroll down to find out more about the program from the official video posted below.
