Variable rate steering is actually quite common, though not so long ago it was the reserve of premium cars.

Now, it’s trickled down to city cars like the Renault Twingo, but it’s apparently not very good. It’s one of the few negatives reviewers keep insisting on when talking about Renault’s new city car.

Another is the poor response of the 90 PS turbo engine, which is more suited for driving out of town, as lag makes pulling away a chore – it does wake up on the move, and it can pull the car along well; I’ve tried it in a variety of (bigger, heavier) Renaults and it’s a torquey almost diesel-like experience.
