Mercedes has just announced that for future models that are to use LED headlights, it’s going to switch from units featuring 24 diodes to ones with 84 per lamp. The promise is better quality lighting for improved safety and a lesser chance of dazzling oncoming traffic.

Called Multibeam LED (they are an evolution of the ones it introduced on the 2014 CLS shown in the video posted below), the head of light systems development at Mercedes, Uwe Kostanzer, says it’s good for “Enabling ideal visibility in all driving situations without dazzling other road users has always been our credo in developing new light systems. We are pursuing the further development of LED technology to this end.”

We’re also informed that LEDs will be incorporated into the high beams too. This will allow for visibility at ranges of up to 600 meters; greater precision will come as well.

Mercedes says there’s no need for laser tech, when LEDs can achieve the same performance at lower cost and complexity.

What’s also new about this revised Multibeam system is that it’s all digital and requires no extra actuators or mechanical movement to adjust the lighting.
