Matt Farah Says BMW M4’s Fake Engine Noise Doesn’t Matter

The new BMW M3 and M4 seem to have riled up quite a few people on the internet with their fake engine noise being pumped into the cabin.

They argue that it’s wrong to be piping in fake noise, when what they should actually be doing is making the car naturally louder.

Well, now Matt Farah as tried out a (manual) M4 for himself and he says it’s not a problem. He argues that the M3/M4 haven’t been given the system because they were not loud enough – the reason they got it was because the interior was just too refined and too little of the noise was penetrating the cabin.

He demonstrates this by cranking down the window and flooring it. Besides, if you’ve seen/heard a new M3 or M4 you’ll already know it really is quite loud, even if it’s still not the most pleasant noise in the world…

If the reason is that the car is so good isolated so maybe… they should add less acoustic isolation to their sports models? Or at least on demand? If someone is buying a sports car then it’s obvious that he want to hear the noise. And car makers are adding more and more isolation so that you can’t hear the engine and then they play those noises because you can’t hear the engine. What the fuck is wrong with the world.
But the truth is that turbo engines just sound less attractive. Prove? Just compare Ferrari Enzo and La Ferrari. Or special exhaust in Ferrari California T. Or explain why Mustang with turbo engine has this speaker shit and the other versions doesn’t.
Previously BMW also added fake noise to the 5 Series because of criticism on the new engines sound. It doesn’t anything to do with the level of acoustic isolation. They sound crap. That’s all.

has anyone ever bought one of these and disabled the wire/fuse or whatever that sends the audio to the speakers? just wondering…

go to youtube and search for “2012 BMW M5 Active Sound Disabled (Before and After)”. You’ll hear the before and after. The difference is noticeable but I don’t think it’s anything people should throw their arms up about.

Is it something that would cause people to wave their arms in the air like they just don’t care?

Im afraid i will have to disagree with matt on this one, Instead of making fake noises because the car is too well insulated, why couldnt there be a vent that opens up and lets more noise in from the engine bay or id happily take an artificially tuned exhaust noise. The S65 V8 at idle sounds better than this car does at peak revs.

I’d never ever buy a car with a fake engine sound(or anything fake in it) no matter how fast it goes and how good it looks. C’mon man, its not a cheap toy for lil kids. Its a serious car. I don’t know what they were thinking puttin this bs in a bmw m. Ricer style. Id prefer a real sound no matter how bad it sounds. This is a pos. Same goes to the mustang.. I hope the upcoming camaro wont take this stupid stuff from them…

fake or not, the new turbo m’s sound like fart. They are so annoying. My friend has the new m3.it is fast enough, but after 1 hour of driving with him i got a headache. Im not joking… Amg sound better imho.

Does a fake Matt Farah matter?

  • TangoUrilla

The M3/4s don’t have fake sound though, its the actual sound just amplified, the noise argument is just internet trolls finding a problem with a car that has totally outclassed the previous generation.

      Someone’s in love.
