The new Volvo XC90 will take extra precautions to protect you if it detects you’re veering off the road and heading for a possible crash.

To see what it behaves like in such a situation, the Swedish automaker put together a little demonstration for the press – it made for quite the spectacular series of videos.

In the event of an imminent crash, the XC90 will first electrically tighten the seatbelt, activate the “spine protecting element” in the base of the seat, then further retract the belt then deploy the airbags if necessary. The final trick bit it does is uncouple the brake pedal so as not to intrude into the footwell any more.

Check out the videos posted after the virtual jump if you want to see an XC90 take to the air – the simulated ditch itself is pretty big and the test is conducted at 80 km/h or 50 mph.
