We love a well made and explicit animation that makes complex and difficult to understand processes seem simple. This is the case with the one featured here which shows off the inner workings of the new Cummins 5.0-liter V8 diesel, the engine that’s set to power the all-new Nissan Titan.
The unit puts out 310 hp and 555 lb-ft or 752 Nm and it promises smooth linear and progressive power delivery through the use of a two-stage turbocharger developed by Holset. There’s nothing revolutionary about how this works, as it’s been in use for a while on engines smaller in displacement than this – Isuzu has something similar on the 2.5-liter diesel D-Max, for instance.
The video posted below shows all the modes that the turbocharger(s) operate in and how the mechanicals change to keep up. The only gripe, really, is that they should have made the arrows they use to represent air flow more visible, because now you can barely spot them, particularly the red ones.
