If you were to ask retired F1 driver David Coulthard (a man who’s won 13 races and made his way on to 62 podiums) what car he’s driving at the moment, he’d tell you that it’s a smart ForTwo BRABUS.

Shocking right? Well, not exactly. As David put it himself, he is “one of the few people who have had the privilege of driving in Formula One. F1 is the Premier League, which is why driving fast on public roads is no fun for me. I’d need to have a private racetrack in my backyard to drive like that. But I live in Monaco, so that’s why I drive a smart.”

However, his reaction to the new Mercedes-AMG GT is quite interesting. “This car will make a lot of people who’ve driven a Porsche 911 up till now think again” said Coulthard while also enjoying the GT’s transmission which “is not as quick as in Formula One, but it’s miles better and quicker than any manual transmission. You can fully concentrate on the line you’re going to take.”

As we know, the 510 HP AMG-GT is one of the hottest cars right now, and a true 911 rival – which is not something you could have said when it came to how much of a precision tool the SLS was or any of the SL AMGs. Coulthard mentioned that he uses the engine brake in order to “take pressure off the rear of the car and stabilize the rear axle with the means i have available to me – brake pressure, the steering wheel – in the same way you balance a pencil on your fingertip.” Very nicely put.

After his experience with the AMG-GT, he was most amazed by the brakes being steady from start to finish. Which indeed isn’t something you find on all supercars after calling their number lap after lap after lap without letting them breathe.
