Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all but even a loving mother wouldn’t have proclaimed the 5-Series Gran Turismo anything but, um, ungainly.

Surprisingly, though, BMW will not kill its ugly duckling and plans to build a successor, if a report from Auto Motor und Sport proves accurate.

Yes, it might have received a lot of criticism for its ungainly looks but the 5-Series GT has apparently sold well enough in China and (get this) the US to justify a replacement.

It will once again be based on the 5-Series saloon, only this time the next generation that is due in 2017 and will feature a new, lighter chassis. The engine range will consist of BMW‘s four- and six-cylinder turbocharged units, while its green credentials will be boosted by a plug-in hybrid, with an electric-only range of about 30 km (19 miles).

Let’s hope that the second time will be the charm. If not, at least be less offensive to those of us who don’t really get this design, er, “language”.
