If you value safety above all else and are looking for something to move you and your family around, Euro NCAP has named its best performing models of the year for you to choose from. These have been split into five categories based on their size and body style.

First is the supermini class, which only noted a single vehicle achieve five stars in 2014: the Skoda Fabia. A total of 14 models belonging to this sector were analyzed throughout the year.

Next up is the small off-roader class which crowned the new Land Rover Discovery Sport as its champion. Then we move to MPVs and see the VW Golf Sportsvan take the top honors.

In the highly contested small family car section of the market, it was the Nissan Qashqai crossover that proved safest of all. The final category rated large family cars and it’s here that the Mercedes C-Class came out on top.

In regards to the results, Euro NCAP’s Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, said they “congratulate those manufacturers whose cars are in our Best in Class list for last year. It shows a commitment to offer the highest levels of safety which, nowadays, means active accident prevention as well as top-rate crash protection. As these technologies become more widespread and costs fall, we will see more manufacturers follow the example of the class leaders and offer the best all-round safety to all consumers.”
