China seems to be leading the way with the next BMW X1 crossover, as yet another prototype has been scooped without camouflage in the PRC.

In fact, these latest shots, courtesy of Autohome, are even more revealing, giving us an unobstructed view of the compact model’s fascia with the imposing double kidney grilles and the rear-end with familiar L-shaped tail lamps.

The second generation of the X1 that will be officially released later this year is based on the Bavarian brand’s new front-wheel drive platform, with the xDrive all-wheel drive system to be offered either optionally (on certain models) or standard (on more powerful variants).

Engine options will mirror the related 2-Series Active Tourer with a range of 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol and diesel mills, all turbocharged.
