The most desirable model of the VW Transporter series is without a doubt the Samba, the most luxurious version of the first generation model – also known as the T1.

Comedian Gabriel Iglesias owns a pristine 1966 21-window model (VW also built a 23-window model) that he bought because a VW Type 2 was the first car he owned after getting his driver’s license. He paid a visit to Jay Leno’s Garage to talk about the Samba bus and let Jay take it for a drive.

It’s amazing how such a slow and unreliable car (it even broke down during the shooting of the video) can now cost about $100,000, but the truth is one does not just buy just the mechanical stuff and iconic shape, but also a period in history, more specifically the 1960s hippie era.

As usual with Jay Leno’s videos, the following footage provides a lot of interesting information about the VW Type 2, so make sure you don’t miss it if you are a fan of the original Transporter.
