Up until recently, if you lived in Europe and wanted to buy the iconic Ford Mustang, you would have had to jump through a few hoops to get one. Not anymore, though.

The new Mustang is now available to order in Europe for the first time in its 50 year history, and people are certainly intrigued, to say the least. In fact, Ford is reporting nearly 500,000 new Mustangs being configured and priced online by potential European customers in just the first month since it became available.

While we see the appeal of designing your own Mustang, choosing your favorite color, specs and so on, let’s not get carried away until we see some real sales. It’s easy to click a few buttons and day dream. Actually purchasing the car is something else entirely.

Still, it was an impressive turnout as Ford websites attracted more than 1.1 million visits from mid-January to mid-February, with configurations split down the middle between the 314 PS 2.3 liter EcoBoost version and the 418 PS 5.0 liter V8.

Roelant de Waard, Ford Europe Marketing & Sales VP explained this as being “50 years of pent up demands across Europe. For some people, the new Mustang is the car they have waited for their whole lives.”

In the UK for example, the Mustang starts off from £28,995 (2.3 EcoBoost) and is now an excellent alternative to other types of two door coupes that you might have found in that price range. Take the Nissan 370Z for example, which is priced from £27,435.

Sure, it’s a lot smaller and more nimble than the Mustang, but then again, so are most other European 2-door sports cars. As for the premium ones, well, that’s a completely different price range.

According to Ford, the most popular overall specification was the EcoBoost Mustang with the 6-speed manual transmission, which accounted for 37% of the models configured.

As for the most popular colors chosen, Race Red and Black each accounted for 20% of the configurations. Deep Impact Blue was also a popular choice in both the UK as well as Italy.

A massive 61% of people across Europe chose the Ebony leather interior finish, 28% of which also checked the Custom Pack which includes the ‘Shaker Pro’ premium audio system with navigation, climate controlled seats, reverse parking sensors, 19″ wheels and side window chrome surrounds.
