The first Mad Max game trailers we posted were by no means conclusive. They showed some cars crashing and a wide open setting, but it was nowhere near as pretty as the movie and lacked pull.

Well, now with the third trailer they’ve addressed that in a major way while revealing the gameplay mechanics all of which add up to a much more promising game than we originally anticipated.

Where do I begin? The open world looks gorgeous and beautifully mirrors the feel of what we saw in the movie trailers. With high-res textures, exaggerated lighting and particles effects (dust, smoke, explosions) it looks like the post-apocalyptic wasteland that it is.

As for the gameplay, well, there’s a lot to talk about here as well. The closest thing we could compare it to, based on information from the trailer, is the Far Cry franchise, or more specifically the last three games in the series. You’re left defenseless in the world, which is full of unfriendly patrols, and you work your way up by finding new gear, leveling up your skills and, of course, ‘building’ and customizing your vehicle.

Driving looks like it’s geared towards fun over physics, but cars look fluid driving over the dunes, and while they do blow up a bit too easily, the way they barrel roll through the air looks quite life-like…

There’s a lot more to talk about, which is surprising given the mediocre first impression it left us with, and now we want to know yet more additional details.

The trailer (posted below) shows a few gameplay mechanics that it doesn’t explain, even if it’s narrated from start to finish to add context to the footage being shown – stuff like the dog or the guy sitting in the back of your car throwing explosives at other cars; the scrap-collecting system is also insufficiently well explained.
