The SVX is quite strange even by Subaru’s often peculiar standards. It looks very futuristic for something from the 1980s, and by 1991 it had grown into quite the sexy coupe… at least from the side.

At the time, it was the most expensive car Subaru had ever built, so you could consider it a flagship offering. Most SVXs come well equipped, even with those slightly annoying electrically-retracting seat belts.

The styling which it previewed found its way, in one form or another, into the DNA of all Subarus that followed, the 1992 Legacy facelift being the first of many to resemble it.

By the time Subaru realized it just wouldn’t sell for the high sticker price they were hoping, they launched the front-wheel drive only model in 1994. However, that didn’t help because it was seen as a compromise so it didn’t really help sales.
