Mercedes Establishes 2015 GLA As Jack Of All Trades

Usually, it’s very easy to poke holes in most car ads. The manufacturers talk a good game but it’s mostly just their marketing skills doing the talking. Not so much this time though.

All you need to do in order to arrive at the same conclusion is take the Mercedes-Benz GLA out for a spin. It is, as they say, “100% Mercedes-Benz“. Besides, when it looks like a Benz, feels like a Benz and drives like a Benz, it sure as hell isn’t a Subaru.

So is it really part adrenaline, part adventure? Sure, why not? You could probably experience both in this car as you could in just about any other car. Part geek, part chic? Certainly so. You can get it with 14-way adjustable power driver seat, harman/kardon LOGIC7 sound system, 7″ display with 80GB hdd navigation, in-dash SD card reader plus a few other goodies. And it’s a really good looking car, both inside and out.

What else do they say in the video? Oh, that it’s part relaxation and part exhilaration – which it is. It’s a surprisingly comfortable long distance cruiser and surprisingly agile thanks to its capable engines and fast 7G-DCT transmission.

As for part sports car and part SUV, well these two are easy. Go ahead and argue against it being sporty when it can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds thanks to its 360 PS (355 HP) turbocharged engine. Of course we’re talking about the GLA45 AMG 4MATIC version here.

But seriously now, 4.8 seconds? It’s the same as what you used to get in the previous generation Audi RS4. Or even the current one which hits the mark in 4.7 seconds.

However, when you’re done being “sporty”, you can go ahead take it offroad (slightly), where it will give you a little bit of confidence thanks to its all-wheel drive and decent ground clearance.

There you have it. This car is exactly what Mercedes says it is. And with a starting price of $31,300 MSRP in the US, it’s good value too if you’ll “settle” for the GLA250.

I have to say, someone I know recently bought a GLA and it’s surprisingly brilliant. Comfortable, nice to drive, spacious

Interior is delicious, looks great (only in the right spec).

Didn’t expect to like it as much as I do… Fair play to Mercedes here. Great all-rounder.

As a previously very satisfied Mercedes owner, I waited for details on the GLA before commiting last year to a new vehicle.

Unfortunately, “Run-Flat” tires are a NO-GO in my book .. I’ve had far, far too many colleages and friends (20+) who have suffered multiple catastrophic (and expensive) tire failures in their BMW’s and Minis to consider the technology to truely be mature. They’re simply not as reliable … and since the CLA and GLA both come equipped with Run-Flats (and no spare tire wheel well to facilitate “reverting” back to standard tires), and despite my excellent experiences over the prior thirteen (13) years … I had to cut Mercedes from my shopping list.

Perhaps in ~five years, I’ll be back to Mercedes, but only if Run-Flats are gone, or if there’s literally no other product choice left in the entire market. At present, VW, Audi and Porsche are not using Run-Flats … the Macan is a tad larger than the GLA and certainly costs more, but not really much more than the AMG version and it punches the ticket in all the right places.

Wait, what is this, an advertisement or a review?
Not sure I believe Sharper Living’s cred either:

Hah. Thanks for posting a link on my website.
Not sure why it’s relevant, but whatever.

Saw one on the road yesterday. It was actually bigger than I expected. More car-like than I expected. More ground clearance than I expected. It looks like a better “Outback” than the Subaru. Subaru’s version has gotten progressively bigger and fatter.

A very good looking, interesting vehicle.
