Opel To Unwrap New Astra In The “Upcoming Weeks”

Opel has released some more photos of the all-new Astra, but don’t expect to actually guess design cues of the car because all the images feature camouflaged development prototypes.

Actually, Opel’s release talks more about camouflage techniques that the all-new Astra, which will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. That’s because Opel celebrates 30 years of camouflaging in 2015 and the upcoming Astra debuts the 3D effect black and white “Cube” camouflage foil.

Opel is confident it will keep the design and the interior of the all-new Astra a secret until the first official photographs are released “in the upcoming weeks,” prior to the world debut in Frankfurt. The headlights and taillights are new as well, but Opel’s camouflage expert Andreas Kubis has found a way to show only what’s necessary in order for the prototypes to get permission to drive on public roads.

As for the 3D effects of the “Cube” foil, Kubis says they make the contours of the new Astra blurred, confusing onlookers. Between 60 and 70 sheets of foil are required to completely cover up a compact class car like the new Opel Astra. The foil is stone chip, temperature and UV-resistant.

Additionally, Opel experts used a special privacy foil for the instruments, center console and infotainment system of the new Astra prototype. “The material is well-known from laptops and mobile phones. It prevents the contents of the screen being visible from the side,” Kubis explained. Furthermore, plastic enclosures and foam flesh simulate the shape of the instruments.
