Porsche boss Matthias Mueller has said that a Porsche 911 Hybrid is under consideration with the decision to be taken this year.

Porsche’s iconic 911 is going through some big changes this year, with the expected facelift to introduce the new line of turbocharged engines across the range. The only models expected to remain naturally aspirated are the hardcore GT3 and GT3 RS derivatives.

Porsche is already offering plug-in hybrid versions of the Panamera and the Cayenne as well as the 918 Spyder, so it’s only natural to develop a similar version for its core model, the 911.

Matthias Mueller said to AutoNews: “Why not? That is a technique which we at Porsche are very familiar with, so we can suppose that we could have plug-ins all over the model range, not only to save fuel but also to boost the performance of these cars.”

Porsche is keen to stress that even its plug-in hybrid models must be able to deliver a true sports car performance and handling. After all, the 918 Spyder is the perfect demonstrator of this recipe.

The final decision is still pending but judging but what Mueller said, we would not be surprised if a 911 Hybrid gets the final green light. The 911 facelift, or 991.2 as it’s known, will make its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
