Jay Leno Gets Excited About Nissan’s GT-R LM Nismo

The most intriguing LM P1 car to enter the Le Mans 24 Hours on June 13 is without a doubt the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo.

It’s a front-engined, front-wheel drive hybrid race car that aims to compete with mid-engined, rear-wheel drive cars like the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, Toyota TS040 Hybrid and Porsche 919 Hybrid.

To help people get a clearer idea of what the GT-R LM Nismo is about, Nissan has shipped one of its cars to California to be featured in one episode of the popular web series Jay Leno’s Garage. Nissan GT-R LM NISMO chief engineer Zack Eakin accompanied the car to answer all of Jay’s questions.

The famous car collector was pretty excited about the GT-R LM Nismo, because it’s the result of engineers thinking outside the box. Obviously, Nissan has important reasons to go this way with its Le Mans racer, and the video that follows reveals them. There’s also a behind the scenes video.

One of the most exciting racing cars in recent years and this is one of the most perfect examples of why Lemans is so much superior to F1 – a petrol powered front engined, mostly front wheel drive, flywheel hybrid racing car successor to a triangle shaped Deltawing, competing in a league of diesel/petrol-electric hybrids. When compared to a league of almost identical cars, with heavy restrictions placed on power and performance so as to make it a ‘drivers’ sport, regardless of the fact that the teams with the most money almost always win, even a 24 hour endurance race, of which a lot is in complete darkness, is more exciting and interesting.

I agree with most of what you said, except for the F1/Le Mans comparison. I watch F1 for the tech and tracks and competition, and yes – the glitz. Endurance racing to me is more man-and-machine. The competition is as much about drivers competing with one another as it is about them competing with their own limitations or the limitations of their vehicles.

except it’s not working. Even some LMP2 cars are faster

It could be that the car won’t be able to compete against others in its class, or even in other classes. I wonder if that is because they haven’t worked out all the bugs, or if they are simply not revealing their hand.

it’s the fault of the front-wheel-drive layout.
