The hot hatch segment is a fast changing environment. Gone are the days when 200 horsepower on a hatchback would impress almost everyone.

There are basically two sub-segments for hot hatches right now: regular models like the VW Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST or high-performance hatches with more than 300hp like the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS.

On account of power alone, the Audi RS3 Sportback clearly belongs to the second category, although the premium factor also has to be considered. We have an increasing number of premium hot-hatches nowadays, which shows how fragmented the segment has become these days. But that’s a good thing, since everyone can pick the right car for their needs.

So where does the Audi RS3 Sportback fit in this picture? Obviously at the higher end of the spectrum, although Xcar doesn’t call it a hot hatch anymore. The ballistic yet effortless performance made possible by the 367PS (362hp) 2.5-liter TFSI engine, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive system made Alex Goy say the RS3 is a hyper hatch.
