For some people, driving pleasure isn’t necessarily derived from controlling a car with pin sharp responses and hard body roll-shrugging suspension.

By modern standards then, the BMW M5 E34 is a loose-feeling relic, but with some fettling and upgrading you can get a lot out of it.

It depends on how much you want to put in in the first place. Do you want to improve its power, brakes or cornering ability? Being an old performance car, there are plenty of off-the-shelf upgrades that you can have, and one company people seem to bow down to religiously is Dinan.

The renowned American BMW tuner has entire programs tailored for each car, and depending on how much of the car is modified, you get different badging on the back.

The E34 M5 that Matt Farah drives for TST in the video below has been given a few Dinan parts, but it’s not an actual Dinan custom build. Even so, cliché or not, they make a good car better, and while the experience is still sporty, it doesn’t really seem to overload the senses.

Don’t get me wrong, this car can be scary in the right (wrong?) hands, but it doesn’t have to extract enjoyment out of driving it.
