Skoda is said to have delayed the launch of the next-generation Roomster MPV until 2016, although initial plans were to unveil it later this year.

According to a report from Auto Express which cites an insider at Skoda, the Roomster has been put on hold until next year.

Unlike the current model (pictured), which has passenger-car underpinnings, the next-generation Roomster marks a strategy change for Skoda, as it is based on the VW Caddy light commercial vehicle that debuted earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show. Although the new Roomster is believed to be production ready, Skoda will wait until next year so as to not steal the new Caddy’s thunder.

Since Skoda Roomster sales were relatively low across Europe, it didn’t make sense for the Czech automaker to develop its unique model. However, Skoda didn’t want to lose the Roomster badge, so it has chosen to build its own version of the Caddy.

The upcoming Skoda Roomster will be sold in only a few key markets across Europe and won’t come to the UK.

The same report says Skoda will unveil two new models for the Superb range at the Frankfurt Motor Show. One of them has already been presented (the eco-friendly GreenLine version), with the other said to be a “sporty-looking RS line” Superb with only visual enhancements.
