The prospect of a raised VW Golf R sounds enticing, if that really is what VW is planning with the purported Tiguan Coupe R model. Its design was apparently previewed by the Cross Blue Coupe Concept (pictured) and it’s set to reach showrooms sometime in 2017 – 2018.

Autocar claims the Tiguan Coupe, in R form, will hit sixty in 5.1 seconds, posting similar overall performance numbers to the Golf R wagon.

The range of engines will consist of petrol and diesel options borrowed from the Golf, including a plug-in hybrid from the Golf GTE.

In regards to the look of the car, while it will look very similar to the aforementioned concept, it will be smaller in size. Obviously, the ‘Coupe’ in its name won’t refer to it being a two-door, as it’s all about the rakish roof these days…

Until then, we will get to see the all-new Tiguan, shown at the Frankfurt motor show in September. It won’t look the same on the outside, as the Coupe will be distinctly styled, but the interior will be most likely shared with the regular model.
