Straight line speed and pure acceleration are not the first two qualities you look for in a hot hatch, but knowing which is fastest is somehow always relevant. In the supermini sector, the battle is and will continue to be fierce.

Two of the newer contenders in the category are the MINI Cooper JCW and Opel’s all-new Corsa OPC. The former is the most powerful production MINI ever, with 228 hp, but the Corsa’s no slouch either, with 207 hp on tap.

The two new cars are put up against an older Renault Clio RS, itself one of the first of the new breed of grown up supermini hot hatches. It’s not the benchmark in the class, but it is one of the best, and with 217 hp on tap it comes in between the other two in terms of power.
