This past March in Geneva, Suzuki gave us two new concepts, the mainstream i-K2 compact hatch, and the quirky i-M4 small crossover.

While the former was presented in production form as the…banal Suzuki Baleno at the Frankfurt show last week, our spies scooped up the more playful i-M4 testing in full camouflage gear in the Alps.

The name with which it will arrive in the market within the next year or so hasn’t been decided yet, but the production iM-4 clearly maintains much of the study’s bolder styling cues, including the thick C-column, extremely short rear overhang and bloated wheel arches along with some hints from Suzuki’s 1970’s SC 100 ‘Whizzkid’ Coupe.

Representing a cross between a city car and an SUV, the tall-riding A-segment model should have similar dimensions to the concept that was just under 3.7 meters long.

Don’t expect the concept car’s hybrid 1.2-liter powertrain with lithium-ion batteries and a start-stop system to make it on the road-going model. Instead, Suzuki’s newly announced 1.0-liter turbocharged Boosterjet petrol with 110hp could be one of the engines powering the mini crossover that is believed to be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive iterations.
