According to Mitsubishi, the Mirage is the most fuel efficient non-hybrid, gasoline powered vehicle available in the United States today, so how would you like one that cones with a premium audio system?

It sounds a bit strange doesn’t it? A budget-friendly subcompact car, with a starting price of just $12,995, is getting what Mitsubishi calls…a custom-engineered premium audio system? Well, stranger things have happened.

Getting better acoustics in the Mirage will cost you a little bit extra of course. The 2015 Mirage Rockford Fosgate Edition has a starting MSRP of $14,945 and in return you get a 300-Watt Rockford Fosgate ecoPUNCH sound system, steering audio controls, Bluetooth, cruise control, leather steering wheel, alloys and special badging, on top of the Mirage DE trim level.

Automatic climate control, high-gloss piano black center console trim, rear spoiler, keyless entry, tilt steering, power windows, split folding rear seat, rear seat heater ducts, body-colored power side mirrors, door handles and tailgate handle are some of the standard features on this special edition model.

The audio system itself is newly developed and features a dual 6.5″ long-throw ecoPUNCH subwoofer system in something called a “Mirage-specific molded acoustic suspension type enclosure” which allows the driver and passengers to “feel” the music. The 300-Watt Class-D amplifier comes with full DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and according to Mitsubishi will deliver effortless power with low distortion.

“Rockford Fosgate is one of the most recognized and coveted audio systems in the automotive industry and we’re excited to offer this package in a segment that doesn’t typically offer premium audio systems,” said Don Swearingen, MMNA executive VP. “With its remarkable affordability, fuel efficiency and an industry-leading warranty, this new audio package for the 2015 Mirage warrants strong consideration amongst car buyers.”

Having a high-power premium audio system in a budget subcompact car is a little counter-intuitive, but if you love listening to music behind the wheel of your Mirage, this special edition model might actually make sense.
