It takes a different kind of approach to get what George Dyke, the owner of this pristine Citroen SM, is thinking when making such bold statements.

In his view, the SM is significant because of Citroen’s innovations. However, the way the French manufacturer implemented them back in the 1970s was not to the detriment of substance or usefulness.

It’s a moderately powerful car by modern standards, putting out an official 170 hp. Yet it can reach 140 mph (220 km/h), had a variable-ratio steering (that weights up at speed, swiveling lights and (that’s a bit OTT) lightweight fiberglass wheels as an option.

Citroen was clearly going for futuristic with the SM and those seats are as much about comfort as they are about marketing. It really worked for them back in the day, today though it now is costly to run and maintain, so it’s not all good news.

It does make you stop for a moment though and wonder if, and which, current cars will be stirring up such emotions in three to four decades time…
