This weekend, Russia is hosting the 15th round of the 2015 Formula 1 Championship. In free practice the heavy rain is making things difficult for the drivers, but apart from that there are more news coming from the venue.

The organizers of the Grand Prix want to switch to a night race, like Singapore, making it more spectacular. That’s something they had in mind since the first GP took place two years ago.

With the feasibility study on making the necessary changes (like installing the lighting equipment) to the Sochi track completed, they are now pushing for it.

Krasdonad region representative Alexander Saurin told Motorsport.com: “We have calculated how much it will cost and how long it will take us to prepare the venue, so we are analyzing the solution.”

The final decision won’t be made until next year, thus they will probably consult with the FIA for the 2017 season. If it gets green-lighted, they plan the race to run at dusk, taking a page out of the Abu Dhabi event’s book. Night races are not a bad idea, provided they are hosted in the right track and get the proper coverage. Why, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, for example, are much nicer to watch at night.
