Toyota pulled the wraps off the unusual KIKAI concept, toying with the idea of a modern hot rod.
The KIKAI Concept debut at the Tokyo Motor Show shows Toyota’s will to emphasize the fundamental appeal of machines, leaving the mechanical parts of the chassis exposed and showcasing the simplicity and beauty of them, just like a hot rod would do.
Toyota says that “this concept encourages us to appreciate the complex beauty of the mechanical aspects of cars. More broadly, it reminds us of the appeal of the physical and tactile in a digital age.”
The KIKAI Concept features also a 1+2 layout with a central driving position and small windows down by the feet of the driver, making the movements of the tires and suspension viewable from the cabin. The cabin also features four retro circular instruments and a classic three-spoke steering wheel in front of the driver.
Toyota has promised to inject more emotion to its future models and although the KIKAI Concept itself is not destined for production, it leaves us with a smile on our stupid faces. It’s not pretty in the traditional way but it’s certainly refreshing.
The KIKAI Concept will make its public debut next to the S-FR and FCV Plus Concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show.
