Nissan has announced that Liverpool’s local passenger transport executive has added three e-NV200 Combis to its fleet of 40 vehicles to use for maintenance purposes.

The e-NV200s will be used to transport workers and their tools around Liverpool, which includes various bus stations, seven tunnel ventilation stations, three ferry terminals and the two Mersey road tunnels (Queensway & Kingsway).

Considering that 90,000 vehicles cross underneath the River Mersey every day, the tunnels have to be maintained effectively by Merseytravel which is where the ultra economical e-NV200 comes in costing an average of just 2p/mile to run.

Of course, this being an all-electric vehicle it also helps improve the local air quality, and that’s not something anyone could say about any diesel or petrol van the city might use for maintenance.

“Our vision is for electric and other low emission vehicles to play a role in developing a vibrant low carbon economy across the region. The introduction of more electric vehicles to our own fleet is another major step forward,” said Liam Robinson, Chair of Merseytravel.

This isn’t the first time the city of Liverpool employed an all-electric Nissan as one of its pool cars, as last year it was the LEAF that held down the job.

In order to make this project sustainable, 30 chargers have been installed at various locations such as Seacombe, Ferry terminal, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Broad Green Hospital, and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

This network of charging points should encourage and support electric vehicle ownership throughout the Liverpool region and West Cheshire.
