General Motors is looking to offer its customers more versatile products by presenting a “box delete” option for its trucks.

The American company is making the option available to fleet and retail customers on the 1500 two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive Regular Cab Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, as Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, General Motors Fleet stated:

“We are in the business of meeting our customers’ needs by providing a range of products and solutions that fit their businesses. Light-duty box delete is a direct response to our customers who have been clamoring for it.”

The option eliminates the box, the rear bumper and spare tire assembly, but it includes high-rate rear springs and a front stabilizer bar from the “Max Trailering Package”, helping the models perform better when handling loads that approach their maximum gross weight vehicle rating. Initially, it may appear that this option cancels-out the main trait of the “pick-up truck”, but apparently the layout appeals to whoever wants to construct a custom rig on the back of the trucks, as Dan Tigges, commercial product manager, General Motors Fleet, stated:

“The Silverado and Sierra light-duty box delete models have been designed to take on the work our customers do every day. For customers with lower payload requirements, this new option will reduce upfront costs and provide fuel-economy advantages compared to heavy-duty box delete alternatives.”

The new light duty models will join the rest of the GM products with box delete option, and prices will start from $29,155 for the Silverado 1500 2WD Regular Cab.
