Oversteer, you say? All-wheel drive is supposed to be safer when you have around 600 HP but, since you so ask, then oversteer thou shall receive.

Unlike the Gallardo, that was available solely with all-wheel drive for most of its life, the Huracán got a RWD sibling just a year after it was first launched.

Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann gave the public its first taste of the Huracán LP 580-2 at the LA Auto Show, where it was unveiled. It does take an eye for detail to distinguish it, though, for apart from the slightly different front and rear bumpers and the new rims, there are no other visual cues.

No surprise for it is, for all intents and purposes, a Huracán that has dropped its AWD system, and with it 33 kg (73 pounds), to satisfy customers who find the standard model not exciting enough for their taste. It has also modified the suspension and recalibrated the steering and traction and stability control systems.

Like the LP 610-4, the LP 580-2 is available only with a seven-speed “e-gear” dual-clutch transmission. As its full name suggests, its 5.2-liter V10 is down on power, too, pumping out 580 instead of 610 PS. This mirrors Lamborghini’s strategy with the Gallardo, though with 3.4 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint and a top speed of 320 km/h (199 mph), performance isn’t an issue.

Being a bit less expensive won’t be a decider for Huracán buyers. They only have to choose between the increased traction, and all its benefits, of all-wheel drive or the “tail-happy”, more driver-oriented rear-wheel drive. What a predicament…
