As gatherings go, this is one of the best a petrolhead can think of, for it celebrates the Rennsport versions of the world’s most prolific sports car.

All of them special, not all the same or equal though whether we’re talking specs, place in 911 RS hierarchy or, of course, price.

Let’s put it this way: you can buy three or four of the rest for less than one 1973 2.7 RS. See, the oldest and least powerful of the lot is the most sought after, with prices for examples in perfect condition going for, well, more than €1.5 million!

It took two decades for another RS to emerge from Weissach, in the form of the 964, and from then on Porsche got the message and rolled them out in due time, with the GT3 prefix from the 996 onwards.

There are three air-cooled, four water-cooled and… well, the odd one out that is the all-new 991. Sure,it’s the latest, most powerful, fastest, best-gripping, what-have-you of them all. At the same time, it has an electrically assisted rack and lacks the revered Mezger engine or a manual gearbox. It’s PDK-only and not a few RS fans have expressed their objections about that.

Is it truly a comparison test, this one from our friends at Autoblog.nl? Actually, no, it’s not. It’s a celebration of the cars Porsche honed to the last detail in their suspension, handling, bodywork – small details that, when combined, made for a unique driving experience.

Not always easy, especially with the early ones, not ideal for public roads with their bumps and creases, yet full of feel and utterly rewarding. See for yourselves and, in the (likely) case you have an issue with the language, there are English subtitles. Problem solved; which one to pick is a bit more difficult.
