Fresh spy shots bring the upcoming BMW 1-Series Sedan to our attention, as the model was nabbed undergoing tests in China.

The car is believed to be produced locally for the Chinese market by the Brilliance-BMW joint venture and will be based on the BMW group’s UKL2 platform, from the Active Tourer, which will also hit the Chinese assembly line soon.

BMW’s rival to the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA will come with front-wheel drive as standard, but the xDrive all-wheel drive may be offered too, as an option.

The engine lineup is expected to be borrowed from the small MPV and include the 1.5-liter three- and 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel units.

Since it is still in development, it’s too soon to talk about its final design, but it will borrow the lines of the recently unveiled Concept Compact Sedan. It’s not known whether BMW will offer it in a single body style or if it will be joined by a Gran Coupe-style too, later on.
