In 2010, Maserati launched its one-make Trofeo MC World Series which saw race-spec versions of the GranTurismo go head-to-head on some of the world’s greatest race tracks.

Earlier this month, the company pulled the plug on the series following the announcement of its new GT4 motorsport program.

The most successful driver was Belgian Renaud Kuppens, who walked away with the title in both 2012 and 2013. Other series winners include David Baldi, Mauro Calamia, Romain Monti and Hollywood star and Patrick Dempsey, who is now racing with Porsche.

Entries consisted of the the GranTurismo. The naturally-aspirated 4.7-liter V8 put out 444 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque and was paired with a sequential racing transmission. Naturally, the racers were completely stripped out and adorned with new aerodynamic aids, such as a towering rear wing, and the compulsory safety equipment.

As a salute to the cancelled championship, AutoEmotionenTV put together a video highlighting the six-year long story of the Trofeo MC World Series.
