It’s been circulated around the web for the past week that Winkelmann will leave Lamborghini to head Audi’s Quattro GmbH, the division responsible for the RS models and of course the R8.

Stephan Winkelmann has been steering Lamborghini since 2005 and played a vital role to the Italian firm’s commercial success over the last years. Under his reign we got the Aventador and Huracan models as well as some the special and really limited Reventon and Sesto Elemento supercars. He is also credited for the expansion of the lineup which is set to include the Urus SUV.

The latest report comes from Car&Driver and says that the Italian executive is set to undertake the leading position of Audi’s Quattro GmbH, and that Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari’s ex F1 Team Principal will succeed him at Lamborghini.

Audi has been trying to poach Domenicali since 2012 with rumors back then suggesting him as the man to lead the return of the German brand in the Formula 1 championship. Since the VW emissions scandal though, a return to the world’s most prestige form of motorsport has been ruled out for now.

Winkelmann is expected to leave the company sometime in early 2016.
