Porsche is apparently throwing in everything they have when it comes to the development of their next hypercar, which needs to be very quick on the Nurburgring.
In fact, their entire build philosophy appears to be based on setting an impressive lap record on the famous German track. And the target is 6 minutes and 30 seconds, according to TopGear, who spoke with the brand’s Motorsport boss, Frank-Steffen Walliser.
“It must achieve a 6m 30s at the Nurburgring. I don’t care about the drivetrain, 6m 30s is the target”, said Walliser. “Sports cars are defined by their performance, then we have to look how to achieve it. An electric car in 6m 30s is quite a challenge. So, a hybrid may be unlikely, a fully electric hypercar even more so.”

The Porsche exec believes that chasing after the Nurburgring lap record with the direct successor of the 918 Spyder is a must. “For 5,000 years, mankind compares performance in games and competition in soccer, in rallying, throwing spears and whatever. I don’t see it will stop”, commented Walliser.
The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is the current Nurburgring record holder. The Italian supercar ran the course in 6:44.97 earlier this year, or 2.3 seconds quicker than the previous ‘Ring King, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
By comparison, the 918 Spyder’s official run took 6 minutes and 57 seconds back in 2013, when it managed to beat the Gumpert Apollo sports by 14 seconds.
One of the best cars ever made by Porsche, the 918 uses a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engine and a couple of electric motors. The total output is 887 PS (875 hp / 653 kW) and 1,280 Nm (944 lb-ft) of torque, enough to help it sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 2.5 seconds, and up to 345 km/h (214 mph). Those are some serious numbers to beat when it comes to the hybrid hypercar’s successor.
