A mysterious Toyota Yaris prototype has been spotted testing on the Nürburgring wearing a camouflage wrap similar to previous Supra prototypes.

This Yaris appears to be a high-performance variant as it features a big intercooler up front, dual exhausts and large, five-lug alloy wheels.

While the prototype has bodywork from the current model, with temporary lights and a modified rear bumper, it could actually be a test mule for the next generation that is expected to ride on the TNGA platform. The redesigned Euro-spec Yaris is slated to be unveiled next year and should be slightly larger than its predecessor.

Little else is known about Toyota’s next-gen supermini, or its performance variant. The limited edition Yaris GRMN, which is based on the current model, uses a supercharged 1.8-liter four that produces 209 hp (156 kW / 212 PS) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission that sends power to the front wheels via a limited-slip differential. This setup enables the hatchback to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 6.4 seconds before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h).

Besides the powerful engine, the Yaris GRMN has a reinforced chassis and a sports suspension with Sachs Performance shock absorbers. It also features an upgraded braking system with bespoke four-piston calipers supplied by ADVICS. The upgrades continue in the cabin, as the Yaris GRMN has Ultrasuede front sport seats and a smaller diameter steering wheel sourced from the GT86, as well as aluminum trim and alloy pedals.
