The Hyundai Accent is entering the 2020 model year with an all-new powertrain that promises to significantly improve fuel efficiency.

Starting under the hood, the 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder has been replaced by a new 1.6-liter Smartstream engine that features dual port injection, a thermal management module and a high energy ignition coil. The engine also has an external exhaust gas recovery system, a narrow water jacket core and continuously variable valve timing.

Thanks to these features and a new Smartstream intelligent variable transmission, which replaces the previous six-speed automatic, the 2020 Accent has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 33 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 36 mpg combined. That’s a sizable improvement over its predecessor which returned 28 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 32 mpg combined.

Unfortunately, the news isn’t all good as the 1.6-liter Smartstream engine has an estimated output of 120 hp (89 kW / 122 PS) and 113 lb-ft (153 Nm) of torque. That’s slightly less than the previous engine which was rated at 130 hp (97 kW / 132 PS) and 119 lb-ft (161 Nm) of torque.

Hyundai didn’t mention any other changes, but the Accent will continue to come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. This is notable as the larger Elantra dropped the DIY gearbox for 2020.

Pricing remains unconfirmed, but the 2019 Accent started at $14,995 and it’s likely that 2020 model will cost the same. Equipment should carryover and means the entry-level Accent SE will likely have air conditioning, cruise control and power windows / locks. Other standard features should include remote keyless entry, a four-speaker audio system and an infotainment system with a five-inch display.
