The Astra K has been in production since 2015, so it’s high-time it got a mid-cycle refresh.

Opel and its British subsidiary, Vauxhall, have played it safe in terms of styling, as apart from a new front end, it pretty much looks the same as before. Things are not that different inside either, where users should expect good quality materials, decent space at the back and in the boot, comfortable seats and a good driving position.

However, it’s all change as far as the engine lineup is concerned. Replacing the old GM-made units are PSA’s 1.2-liter petrol and 1.5-liter diesel. The former is offered in three states of tune, with 110 PS (108 hp / 81 kW), 130 PS (128 hp / 96 kW) and 145 PS (143 hp / 107 kW), whereas the latter comes with 105 PS (104 hp / 77 kW) and 122 PS (120 hp / 90 kW).

AutoTrader had the chance to check out the higher-output petrol and diesel burners, stating that they both feel responsive and strong. The smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission is also new, although it’s an optional extra not available in lesser grades.

For the 2020MY, Opel/Vauxhall has also tweaked the suspension, which does a good job at absorbing bumps in the road most of the time. The steering is nicely weighted and the overall setup inspires confidence, so drivers will put the right foot down more often.

Now, the revised Astra is obviously good, but it’s still a challenger to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf (which is about to get an all-new version) and Ford Focus. So, how does it compare to them?
