MINI might be working on the new generation of the Countryman, but there is another SUV under development. We are talking about the production version of the MINI Aceman concept from last summer, which is coming as an electric-only proposal to bridge the gap between the Hatch and the Countryman.

In typical MINI fashion, the prototypes were fully wrapped in a yellow-themed camouflage, with faux taillight stickers trying to confuse the eye. It is clear however we are talking about a production version of the Aceman, from the angular shape of the headlights and the overall proportions.

The design appears to be slightly toned down compared to the concept, with more conventional bumpers, door handles, and lighting units, alongside smaller diameter wheels. The SUV gets a modest ground clearance, short overhangs, door-mounted mirrors, and a typical MINI greenhouse with the signature floating roof design. We can also see a faux hood scoop with a plastic cover, and the charging port mounted on the rear fender. Inside, the model will most likely get a large round infotainment touchscreen which will be shared across MINI’s future model range.

According to our spy photographers, the Aceman will measure just over 4 m (157.5 inches) long, which is similar to the first-generation Countryman. Note that the third-gen Countryman is expected to be significantly larger, likely exceeding the 4.5 m (177.2 inches) mark. There is a chance that the Aceman works as an indirect replacement for the Clubman which is rumored to be discontinued after the end of the current generation’s lifecycle.

Just like the upcoming fully electric MINI Hatch, the Aceman is expected to ride on Chinese-sourced underpinnings. A stretched version of the EV-dedicated architecture developed in collaboration with Great Wall will be used, allowing for a roomy interior despite the compact footrpint. It is too early to talk about specs, but the model could get dual electric motors for AWD capability, just like the rival smart #1.

The MINI Aceman is expected to debut in 2024, two years after the concept. It will likely be the brand’s second EV offering, after the China-built MINI Hatch that is set to debut in 2023.
