One of Audi’s European market models, the A5 Sportback, is reported to join the US lineup next year.

The info comes as a surprise, as initial data revealed that only the coupe and convertible of the second-generation A5 would be sold in the States. However, in a talk with AutoNews during the media event for the 2017 A4, Audi of America President Scott Keogh hinted towards such a vehicle.

I feel confident that there will be another variant of the A5 that will be a real home run. There’s one we don’t have“, said the automaker’s boss.

No word on which powertrains will be offered, of course, but we expect the new A5 to use the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger from the A4, capable of churning out 252 HP (256 PS) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. The S5 will be powered by the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 of the S4 will provide the S5 and, at some point, there will be a range-topping RS5.
