After being cancelled for two years in a row, the iconic Bonneville Speed Week this year.

According to SACTA’s site, the next Bonneville event will be held between 13 and 19 August, 2016.

The Bonneville Speedway is an area of the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah, that acts as the venue for the numerous land speed record attempts, and the world-famous Bonneville Speed Week.

First used as a proving ground for speed machines and daredevils in 1912, the event slowly grew, becoming more and more popular amongst speed enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the annual Speed Week was cancelled in both 2014 and 2015 due to deteriorating track conditions, as the depth of the salt crust at Bonneville has been decreasing due nearby potash mining exploration – albeit the weather didn’t help either. In comparison, back in the 1940s and 50s, the salt crust measured at 3 ft (0.91 m), as opposed to just 0.17 ft (0.052 m) in 2015.

But the good news comes from Southern California Timing Association’s Chairman Pat McDowell, and President / Race Director Bill Lattin who said:

“As of right now we have an 8-Mile Long Course, a 5-Mile Short Course and a 3-Mile Rookie Course. Course Prep is in motion and the 5-Mile & 3-Mile courses have been groomed.”
