Different cars look best in different colors. That certainly applies as much to supercars and hypercars as it does to any other type of automobile. But the bottom line is that they all look good in black.

Just look at this pair, for example: a Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari LaFerrari, both 2015 models decked out all in black, inside and out. And they’ll both be on RM Sotheby’s auction block next month at Pebble Beach.

As close as rivals get, both these top-of-the-line hypercars pack hybrid powertrains kicking out around 900 horsepower to deliver 0-60 times of around two and a half seconds and top speeds in excess of 210 mph. In short, they’re a couple of the fastest, most advanced road-going performance machines ever devised.

But unlike the other member of the trifecta – the McLaren P1 – you don’t see these all “murdered-out” in black very often – more often in silver (in the Porsche’s case) or red (in the Ferrari’s). That’s what makes the sight of these two heading to the same place so unusual.

Their coincidence may not be entirely coincidental, though. While their consigning owners haven’t been disclosed, we get the distinct feeling that the owners of these two are one and the same – especially considering their matching color schemes, common location in the San Francisco Bay area, their consignment to the same auction house for the same event, and the fact that both have been displayed at Monterey before: the Porsche at Pebble Beach in 2014, and the Ferrari at The Quail last summer.

They’ve also both been beautifully captured by the same photographer – David Bush, for RM Sotheby’s – so check them out in the image galleries below.
